CCA Adjunct Union Update 11/10

In case you missed our membership meeting last Wednesday, here is a brief rundown of some of what we discussed as well as ways to get involved and have your voice heard as we head into contract negotiations!
Bargaining Team
Members in attendance at the November 5 general membership meeting voted to confirm the 6 people nominated to represent CCA non-ranked faculty at the bargaining table. This vote was confirmed with the agreement to add 1 or 2 more members specifically from Architecture.
Your CCA Bargaining Team is:

Carol Manahan, Senior Adjunct, Critical Studies
David Skolnick, Senior Lecturer, Writing and Literature/Graduate Design
Hugh Behm-Steinberg, Senior Adjunct, Writing and Literature/MFA Writing
Rob Hugel, Senior Adjunct, Graphic Design
Pamina Traylor, Senior Adjunct, Glass
Tony Discenza, Adjunct, Graduate Fine Arts
If you teach in Architecture and are interested in serving on the bargaining team, or if you would like to nominate a willing colleague, contact me at or 510-499-7467.
Bargaining Survey
If you haven’t yet, fill out the bargaining survey. This is the simplest and least time-consuming way to make sure your voice and interests are included in your union contract. The deadline to complete this is November 19.
Get educated
Wonder what’s going to happen during the bargaining process? Join your Bargaining Team for a training on Friday November 21 from 3-6 at 350 Rhode Island in San Francisco. This is the SEIU office near the CCA San Francisco campus. The training will be led by Celeste Peterson, SEIU staff negotiator for SFAI, Mills, and CCA. If you would like to attend contact me at or 510-499-7467.
Get involved
Attend the next General Membership meeting on Thursday December 4, 7-8:30, on the SF campus in GC2 (Grad Center 2).
A strong union happens when there is an active membership. That’s how adjunct faculty at Tufts University just won an excellent first contract(
Also, become a part of the Contract Action Team (CAT) and support the bargaining team or help organize art events and actions with adjunct faculty from across the Bay Area to raise awareness and educate others about issues and changes happening in higher education. Talk to your colleagues and contact me at or 510-499-7467.
Share your story on  KALW TONIGHT, Monday 11/10 at 7pm
Radio KALW 91.7 is hosting a talk about Adjunct conditions TONIGHT!
"Contingent, adjunct or part-time professors make up the majority of faculty nationwide, yet many labor under difficult if not harsh conditions -- including low pay, lack of resources and minimal job security. As the slogan goes, teachers’ working conditions are students’ learning conditions. What is this emergent labor movement working to make visible, transform and achieve?"
