Mills College Adjunct Union Weekly Update 11/6

11/6/14

Weekly Mills College Union Update

The interim bargaining team is ready to present formal economic proposals to the administration on November 10th. Thanks to the input of many members, we’ve worked hard to put together proposals that reflect the respect and support that all adjunct professors at Mills deserve! These proposals address wages, benefits, job security, a clear path for promotion and advancement, performance assessment, professional development, compensated service, and greater inclusion in institutional governance.  If you would like to see an outline of the proposals the union will be presenting for our first contract, please contact Stephanie Young (krbygrip@yahoo.com) for details.

Union Elections:

This summer, in response to the unilateral cuts and changes instituted by the administration, the Mills adjunct union convened an interim bargaining team so as to enter immediately into negotiations for a contract and thus establish clear legal protections for our members. The intent has always been that this team truly be interim, and so we will need to begin the process of nominations and elections for a permanent bargaining team. If you would like to nominate any member(s) (including yourself!) for a position on the bargaining team please respond to this email. For further information on what being on the bargaining team entails in terms of workload and commitment, please email Stephanie at the email above. Among the proposals being presented next week include one for full or partial course releases for union work.

We hope to gather nominations over the next two months and hold a membership meeting and election in January once the spring term begins.

Next Bargaining Session:

Mon, November 10, 1-4pm, GSB. ALL members are invited to sit in on negotiations as we present our formal proposals. If you would like to sit in and observe all or part of the bargaining session, please email davidbuuck@gmail.com and be prepared to meet beforehand to be briefed on procedure. Observers can see how the process works and demonstrate adjunct support for proposals; you won't need to say anything other than introduce yourself.

Meet outside the GSB at 12:45 to show support and meet other members, whether or not you want to sit in on negotiations.

Next General Membership Meeting:

Monday, December 1, 4-6pm, Faculty/Staff Lounge (Tea Room). Snacks provided. Peter Mancina, researcher for SEIU1021, will give a presentation on Mills’ finances. Come and find out the facts about the economic situation at Mills, ask questions, and discuss. All Mills faculty — tenured, tenure-track, and adjuncts — invited! Spread the word!

Ways to Get Involved

This is a crucial time in contract negations and we want to be as organized and involved as possible. One way to get involved is to join our Communications Action Network (CAN). The CAN supports the union by informing, mobilizing in support of union negotiations and other relevant issues.  The CAN includes Department Point Persons, who are responsible for sharing the latest bargaining updates, collecting input from adjuncts about issues and ultimately getting others involved through a variety of events/actions. Another way to get involved is participating on the Bargaining Team. The Bargaining Team crafts contract language and negotiates directly with administration. The team is always looking for new members. You can join at any time.

Please reply to this email if you would like to get involved or want more information about becoming a member of the Bargaining Team or Communications Action Network, or Department Point Person.

Ongoing: Open Office Hours!

The Weekly Mills College Union Update goes out every week. The goal of these updates is to communicate the latest news and events with the entire Mills College membership in order to foster an informed and transparent Union culture.

If you have comments that you would like to share with fellow Mills Union members, please let us know and we will include it in future updates. If you want to be added to the Mills NTT union ‘in-house’ Google-group discussion list, please email davidbuuck@gmail.com.

You can also follow MillsAction, a new group of students, alum, faculty and staff, on Facebook at https://m.facebook.com/millsactionnow, as they work alongside the union to help support adjuncts and organize around related issues at Mills.

And remember: better working conditions for teachers = better learning conditions for students!

In Solidarity,

The Mills College Communications Action Network (CAN) – A group of Mills College NTT Union members dedicated to supporting the union by informing, mobilizing and building power amongst the membership during and beyond contract negotiations. Anyone is welcome to join the CAN. Please let us know if you are interested in helping out!
