Union Elections

This summer, in response to the unilateral cuts and changes instituted by the administration, the Mills adjunct union convened an interim bargaining team so as to enter immediately into negotiations for a contract and thus establish clear legal protections for our members. The intent has always been that this team truly be interim, and so we will need to begin the process of nominations and elections for a permanent barging team. If you would like to nominate any member(s) (including yourself!) for a position on the bargaining team please respond to this email with

1)   Name of  nominate(s) to the Bargaining Team (including self-nominations)

2)   Email or phone number of nominee(s)

3)   Department and Division of nominee(s)

For further information on what being on the bargaining team entails in terms of workload and commitment, please email Stephanie Young at krbygrip@yahoo.com. Among the proposals presented last week one includes full or partial course releases for union work.

We hope to gather nominations over the next two months and hold a membership meeting and election in January once the spring term begins.

Mills College Union Proposals Summary

Negotiating a first contract is always a lengthy process, but your interim bargaining team has been hard at work all semester, and has now submitted the vast majority of our proposals, based on adjunct faculty’s priorities expressed through the bargaining survey and meetings.

Below is a summary of the proposals we have submitted, as well as the status of those proposals in parentheses. (Submitted indicates that we have not yet received a response or counterproposal from administration.)

Mills Bargaining Update

This Monday, the interim bargaining team (along with other Mills union members, students and SFAI union members) met again with the administration, and put our final proposals on the table, including areas covering wages, job security, evaluation and advancement, compensation for service, as well as health and welfare. The administration had no immediate response to these proposals, but did present counter-proposals for some of our previously submitted proposals covering things such as Scope of Agreement, Non-Discrimination, and Academic Freedom. We were able to reach agreement on some of these, though the Administration refused to sign these tentative agreements, so we will be insisting that they do so next session. We had counter-proposals drafted for the Non-Discrimination and Academic Freedom clauses, on which we are still not in agreement.

We want to thank everyone who came out to support the bargaining team in our fight for a fair contract; it really makes an impact! We are bargaining next Wednesday, November 19th on campus. Look for details soon on how you can participate.

A summary of all the proposals that have been submitted thus far will be sent to all members shortly. Please be on the lookout for that email.

If have any questions about the status of bargaining or just want to learn more, please contact Stephanie Young (krbygrip@yahoo.com) for details.

Weekly Mills College Union Update

The interim bargaining team is ready to present formal economic proposals to the administration on November 10th. Thanks to the input of many members, we’ve worked hard to put together proposals that reflect the respect and support that all adjunct professors at Mills deserve! These proposals address wages, benefits, job security, a clear path for promotion and advancement, performance assessment, professional development, compensated service, and greater inclusion in institutional governance.  If you would like to see an outline of the proposals the union will be presenting for our first contract, please contact Stephanie Young (krbygrip@yahoo.com) for details.

Bargaining Update

At our most recent session (10/8) the bargaining team met for the first time with Dave Donahue, the interim provost, along with Tammi Jackson and Natasha Baker, the lawyer representing the College. We were saddened to hear of Provost Kimberley Phillips health concerns, but look forward to continued collegiality and productive conversation with the interim Provost. The bulk of this session was spent reviewing updated and new spring contracts (which were sent on Monday August 27 from the Provost's Office-if you are expecting a contract and haven't yet received one, please let us know!)

·      Online petition to support good faith bargaining and a fair contract for all adjuncts at Mills

Ways to Get Involved
This is a crucial time in contract negations and we want to be as organized and involved as possible. One way to get involved is to join ourCommunications Action Network (CAN). The CAN supports the union by informing, mobilizing in support of union negotiations and other relevant issues.  The CAN includes Department Point Persons, who are responsible for sharing the latest bargaining updates, collecting input from adjuncts about issues and ultimately getting others involved through a variety of events/actions.

Another way to get involved is participating on the Bargaining Team. The Bargaining Team crafts contract language and directly negotiates with administration. The team is always looking for new members. You can join at any time.
